It's the question we get asked most: "Should we go offshore or inshore?" The honest answer is, it depends on your group. Here's exactly how to decide.
OFFSHORE
INSHORE
Either way, every angler needs a fishing license. Costa Rica requires one by law. It is not part of the charter price, and you buy it before the trip, online from INCOPESCA. Feel free to ask, we can provide guidance.
Choose Offshore If...
- You want to target Marlin, Sailfish, or large Yellowfin Tuna, these are deep-water species and you need to travel to reach them.
- Your group is comfortable on a boat for 6–8 hours, potentially in rougher water.
- You have experienced anglers who want a serious big-game challenge.
- You're visiting during the dry season (Dec–Apr) when offshore conditions are calmer.
Choose Inshore If...
- You're traveling with kids or people prone to seasickness, inshore waters are significantly calmer.
- You want to target Roosterfish, Costa Rica's iconic inshore species and one of the most exciting light-tackle gamefish in the world.
- You have 4 hours or a half-day available, inshore works perfectly for shorter trips.
- You're a first-time angler wanting to learn the basics without long runs offshore.
The Best of Both: BBQ Combo
Can't decide? Our Fishing + Beach BBQ combo starts with inshore fishing, adds snorkeling, and finishes with a fresh BBQ on a secluded beach. It's our most popular trip for mixed groups and families who want a full day of activity.
